We’ve talked about Online Personal Branding & America’s Next Top Model here before. Once again, Tyra is dabbling in Social Media. Last night’s episode of ANTM shed some new light on a social media faux pas. In the season finale of ANTM, it was explained that one of the finalists in the running to become America’s Next Top Model All Star had been disqualified after her final runway walk.

America’s Next Top Model Facebook Blunder Costs All Stars

In an official statement from the CW, they said:

“After production wrapped on the current cycle of America’s Next Top Model, we learned information that made Angelea ineligible and she was subsequently disqualified from the competition.  As a result, new scenes were filmed to address this for the audience during the finale.”

Immediately after I found out who won this cycle, I was doing a Google search for “Angelea ANTM disqualified” and finding a lot of theories. There has not been an official statement from Angelea Preston or the show as to why she was disqualified. Angelea isn’t saying anything on Twitter, but there could be good reason for the silence according to theories.

The most popular theory is that Angelea prematurely announced on Facebook that she was the winner of ANTM. A post to Facebook such as this violates the rules of the competition. This suggests to many that Preston had actually won the cycle when judging occurred in Greece, but was then disqualified for leaking the information after production wrapped and she was found out. This forced the show to re-shoot the final judging in Los Angeles and crown a different winner.

But Angelea Preston is not the first (and certainly won’t be the last) to make a social media mistake. This got me thinking about my favorite social medial blunders of 2011:

A Starbucks Rant Leads to Termination

Christopher Cristwell, a former barista for Starbucks took to YouTube with The Starbucks Rant Song. Cristwell was fired and he discusses that in a second video. He understood the consequences and holds no bitterness for the company. Cristwell says that he “loved the customers a lot, too” and would miss working as a barista.

Alec Baldwin & Words With Friends

While this is less social media, and more of a game, I still think it counts. This example is one of my favorites because it just made me want to play “Words with Friends” with Alec Baldwin really bad. Baldwin was on an American Airlines flight when he was asked to stop using his phone. According to Baldwin he was singled out by a flight attendant and rudely asked to stop using his phone when others were still using their phones. Baldwin said he was playing “Words With Friends” while the plane was still at the gate and delayed more than a half hour.

Baldwin took to Twitter to tell the story and then wrote a piece for The Huffington Post about his experience. Baldwin has issued an apology to his fellow passengers for any inconvenience, but his flying lesson did not include an apology to the flight attendant or American Airlines. Baldwin has since shut down his Twitter account.

Everyone knows about this. Weiner sent an inappropriate picture through Twitter that eventually led to the former Congressional representative losing his seat. Let his punny name forever remind you the next time you want to Tweet something inappropriate.
